After nearly a century of looking both inward and outward, Richard Mayhew creates what he calls "mindscapes," the essence of places remembered or imagined. His brilliant paintings allude to an "invented consciousness," a spirituality and connection to the land, inherited from his Native American and African American ancestors.

The artist himself was immersed in the Civil Rights struggle and is a lauded member of the National Academy of Art, but he resists depicting overt themes of ethnicity or culture.
